Cocktail: Sparkling Burajiru

Earlier this month, we had the opportunity to review several samples of cocktail bitters sent to us courtesy of The Bitter Truth. This is one of the original recipes that came out of that sampling experience. Did you know that Brazil has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan? This lightly effervescent cocktail brings together elements of Brazil and Japan, fusing cachaça (Brazil’s most popular distilled alcoholic beverage) with sparkling Japanese sake and a one-two punch of fresh fruit and herbs. Topped off with a touch of expressive orange bitters, it’s a drinkable fusion that refreshes.

Sparkling Burajiru (serves 1)


  • 3 ripe strawberries, chopped
  • 3-4 fresh basil leaves (with stems removed), broken or torn into pieces
  • 3 oz. chilled sparkling sake
  • 1.5 oz. Cachaça
  • 1 oz. Limoncello
  • 1 dash The Bitter Truth Orange Bitters

Method: Muddle strawberries and basil leaves with cachaça and limoncello. Add orange bitters. Add ice and top with chilled sparkling sake.
