Make These Wine Slushies and Sip Summer in a Glass

Reviewer’s Note: Samples of the wines discussed here were provided at no cost in exchange for my honest review.

Frosé no longer rules the roost when it comes to wine slushie. This is looking to be the summer of the frozen wine cocktail, and there are plenty of ways to go when making them. Jam Jar Wines recently shipped a bottle of its 2016 Sweet White and 2016 Sweet Shiraz our way so that we could try our hand at whipping up some fruit-forward Summer Lovin’ in a glass.

Fans of sweet whites led by juicy aromatic expressions of peach and apricot with citrus intimations and refreshing acidity will appreciate the 2016 Sweet White. Its fullness of body and clean finish full of apricot and oranges makes for a round wine that lends itself to inclusion in playful cocktails best enjoyed outdoors on warm days. The 2016 Sweet Shiraz is characterized by a nose packed with red and black berries, strawberry, and cherry.  Furtive dark chocolate lurks beneath these, lending a creamy in-mouth sensation to sipping this full-bodied wine that finishes with a burst of berries and strawberry notes. Each of these wines worked well in the following cocktails certain to be welcome at any backyard barbecue this summer.

Jam Jar Sangria Slushie
PREP TIME: 15 minutes
SERVING: 6-8 stemless wine glasses (serves 6-8)
  • 2 cups Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz
  • 1½ cups frozen berries
  • 3 ounces vodka (optional – we suggest vanilla)
  • 3 ounces triple sec or ¼ cup of sugar to sweeten (optional)
  • ice to thicken
  1. Mix all ingredients together in a blender with ice. Blend until smooth, continuing to add ice to reach your desired consistency.
  2. Optional: add triple sec or sugar to sweeten according to your preference.
  3. Garnish your glasses with a strawberry and serve!

*BONUS DRINK: Okay, so this isn’t a slushie, per se, but I had the wine, so I also made the daiquiri recipe sent to me by Jam Jar. Because daiquiris are delicious and well-suited to summertime drinking. And because “leftover wine” is an odious concept to which I refuse to be a party. Make it. And enjoy!
